Santo Domingo - City of Christopher Columbus, Dominican Republic - On Easter Sunday 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on a Caribbean island in his ship "Santo Domingo." He named the island Hispaniola "Little Spain" and it became the center of the early Spanish Caribbean. Four years later, Bartholomew Columbus, Christopher's brother, founded what is now the capital of the Dominican Republic on the bluffs of the Ozama River the oldest city founded by Europeans on American soil. The Cathedral of Santo Domingo, the Alcázar de Colón castle, the royal residences, the churches and the many monasteries as well as the fortifications and the first government buildings are all well preserved even now, making Santo Domingo a great example of a 16th Century Spanish city in the New World. Our film tells the story of the city from the perspective of Christopher Columbus himself. What would he think of it now?
