Das Büro des Sheriffs in DeRidder, Louisiana, erhält 2016 einen Anruf vom Besitzer des "Dee's Motel". Er teilt mit, dass er eine Tote gefunden hat. Im Motel findet die Polizei einen blutigen Tatort vor, die Frau war Opfer eines brutalen Angriffs geworden. Das Opfer wird als Sonya Ortego identifiziert, die mit ihrem Verlobten seit fast zwei Monaten in dem Motel wohnte.
