Die Weltraumbehörde NASA schickte am 19. Januar 2006 eine Raumsonde zum am äußersten Rande unseres Sonnensystems liegenden Zwergplaneten Pluto, der nach dem römischen Gott der Unterwelt benannt wurde. 2015 näherte sich "New Horizons" Pluto soweit, dass erstmals scharfe Aufnahmen von ihm möglich waren und globale Karten des Zwergplaneten und seines Mondes erstellt werden konnten.
